Obviously, no woman in the 18 th century, Duchess or not, would wear pants. It was during this time that the director and Amy Blackman and I decided to put Theodosia in breeches. I met with a few of the actors before even finishing the designs to discuss their concerns and ideas. I am one of those designers who considers the actors equal partners in the design process (they’re the ones wearing the clothes, after all) and that method of working was particularly helpful on a play like this. Because the play had so many physical challenges, I also tried to collaborate as closely as I could with the actors. Working in tandem with the other designers and our fearless leader, Jeffrey Binder, we slowly but surely saw our collaborative design come into focus. As this is a period piece, my first stop was to the library where I began refreshing my knowledge of 18 th century English culture, history, and fashion. The process of costume design nearly always begins with research, and lots of it. It’s quite a beautiful and spectacular time, but that would be a disservice to the story and the other artists, so it was important to keep my eye on what the final result would look like. And in a period piece like this one, it would be easy to allow the costumes to overwhelm the actors and the story. As a costume designer, my most important job is to tell the story. The first step is to understand the story and its themes inside and out. Sword fighting in corsets and petticoats and enormous wigs, you say? Bring it on.Īfter reading the play a half a dozen times, I dove in. I was excited about the challenge of working on a new 18 th century period piece, full of strong female characters who all spend much of the play sword fighting and rolling around on stage. And I appreciated its connection to the English Restoration plays of the 17 th century, the sparkling banter of the later Sentimental Comedies, and the biting wit of Moliere. When I first read Arthur’s delightful play, I was entranced. It’s an exhilarating and humbling experience. I love the challenges such an experience brings, to do something that very few have done before, to be among the first to interpret and bring a play to life. But nothing brings me greater joy than working on a brand new play. I have had the great fortune to design over a hundred productions in my twenty years working as a costume designer. This week’s blog was written by The Lady Demands Satisfaction Costume Designer Kirche Leigh Zeile.

The covers were also used in Grey’s Anatomy. He also recorded two covers for ‘Chasing Cars’ and ‘Today has been okay’. The song, ‘Sun’, was used in the trailer for ‘The Fault in Our Stars.’ He released ‘Atlas: Year One’ in July 2014 and ‘Atlas: Year Two’ was released in 2015. He released another song from the album early 2014. The same song was used in 2014 on the OST of The Little Death. The new song, ‘Light’, was used as a soundtrack for Turner Classic Music’s ‘TCM Remembers’. Towards the end of 2013, Ryan O’ Neal released a song from his new album ‘Atlas’. In 2012, he released an EP consisting of songs from the yearbook project, and the previous Sleeping at Last studio albums. In 2011, an instrumental from Sleeping at Last was featured in ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn-part 1 Original Picture Soundtrack’. The songs ‘Wires’ and ‘emphasis’ were featured on Season fur of ‘Private Practice’ and ‘Tethered’ was featured on ‘Grey’s Anatomy, From the Ground Up’. It included songs such as ‘Watermark’ and ‘Homesick’ which sold pretty well. He released 12 EPs each one for every month. He announced on his website that he would be releasing three songs every new month for one year. On October 1 2010, Sleeping at Last started the ‘Yearbook’ project. Being left alone in the band, Ryan O’ Neal retained the band name and released solos and short EPs. Chad O’Neal and Perdue left the band soon after and chose to focus on other interests. On their own, they released ‘Keep No Score’ album in 2006 and ‘Storyboards’ in 2009. Their ‘Ghosts’ album was successful and the band toured the nation. In 2003, they released the album ‘Ghosts’ but later chose to go independent again. He gave them the help they needed to get signed to Interscope Records. It was this album that caught the attention of Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins frontman. In 2000, Sleeping at Last recorded their debut album, ‘Capture’. However, Chad O’ Neal and Dan Perdue left the group to pursue other interests and Ryan O’ Neal stayed and adopted the group name. The group played different styles including emo, dream pop, alternative pop/ rock and alternative/ Indie rock. Popular Sleeping at Last songs include ‘Say’, ‘Turning Pages,’ ‘and ‘Slow and Steady.’ They started out playing in local gigs and earned themselves a decent following before they got the support they needed to go national. It was started with Ryan as the lead singer and guitarist, Dan as the bassist and Chad as the drummer. Sleeping at Last began as an emo –inflected group made up of Ryan O’ Neal, his sibling Chad O’Neal and Dan Perdue. We hope to incourage individuals to learn and enjoy telescope making and observational astronomy. Additionally, the manual contains a plethora of celestial objects that can be observed with the telescope. The intent of this kit and instructions is to provide a means to build and learn the fundamentals of telescope making-to go through the whole process from start to finish. But, the materials for the tube and tripod are to be purchased and constructed by the telescope maker. A few of the basic telescope components are also included, like the cells for the objective lens and eyepieces. The kit includes the basic materials to grind and polish a 1.75 inch diameter refractor lens (with a clear aperture of 1.5 inches) along with two eyepieces that yield 30x and 60x. and Ken Graun have created a basic telescope kit for anyone wanting to try their hand at building a simple refractor telescope and explore the heavens. While you might feel that there’s not much to look forward to – we’re still deploying improved versions of these modern marvels to better our understanding of the universe. For those wanting to learn how to make and use a “Small, Simple, Beginner’s Telescope Anyone Can Build.” Adults-Youngsters-Class Projects The invention of the telescope truly revolutionized the way we see the world and our place in it. They opened humanity to an entirely new world in the cosmos, and as these telescopes have shrunk, we’ve turned many of them back towards the surface to watch birds and other forms of wildlife. While there have been more modern advances to the telescope, the ones that amateur astronomers use are still reminiscent of these early inventions. The Newtonian Reflecting Telescope took care of this issue. Refracting telescopes would place red light and blue light in different positions, leading to an image that didn’t necessarily match reality. Second, it removed the aberration issues that plagued refracting telescopes. If you were trying to avoid light pollution or take a telescope anywhere outside of the lab, this was a significant advantage. First, reflecting telescopes were much smaller than refracting telescopes, making them much more portable. For starters, reflecting telescopes were much cheaper to build, easier to assemble, and gave a wide field of view.īut those advantages paled in comparison to the next two features. When Newton finished his reflecting telescope in 1668, it revolutionized the telescope world. This was an idea that astronomers and scientists talked about for some time, but nobody actually built it before Newton. While both compound and refracting telescopes existed, neither utilized mirrors instead of lenses. Before Isaac Newton, every telescope worked off the same principle – refraction. According to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, striped skunks do best at elevations below 5,900 feet (1,800 meters). Pasture, farmland, and hay crops, especially along fence lines, are also utilized. They may be found in open, exposed areas, though they seek cover in brushy, weedy stream and gulch bottoms or canyons. They are quite at home in a variety of landscapes, from wooded areas to grasslands and agriculture fields, and even in urban areas, among humans. Just about anywhere! Striped skunks make a living throughout North America, from southern Canada into northern Mexico. Then, pour yourself a glass of tomato juice and enjoy the fresh air! The oxygen released by the foaming neutralizes the ungodly smell, and the detergent removes the oily part that holds the thiols in fur or skin. Let stand for about five minutes, then rinse. Mix ingredients, and quickly apply while still foaming. While the noxious “thiols” in skunk spray may persist for days, here is one recipe for a solution to oxidize the offending smell on people or pets:Īdd one quarter cup of cup of baking soda to one quart of three-percent hydrogen peroxide and one teaspoon of liquid shampoo (or pet shampoo). One of the noxious ingredients makes it somewhat waterproof, so bathing has little effect on ridding the victim of the stench. This legendary tactic leaves no permanent damage to its victims, but the stench may linger for days and the horrifying memory of the smell lasts much, much longer. Spewing an oily, yellowish liquid produced by anal glands under its fluffy tail is a stroke of evolutionary genius. When push comes to shove, it is one of the most effective defense mechanisms known. This “shot gun” approach deters most predators. If it is being chased and cannot see the predator, the skunk emits an atomized cloud of stench that the chaser must run through. If the threat persists, a skunk can position itself in a U-shape so that its front and back ends are facing the trouble-which ensures the spray will hit the mark, without getting a drop on itself. In response to threats, skunks first try to escape, and if that’s not possible, they hiss and stamp their feet. Despite the skunk’s well-known stinky strategy, plenty of predators would kill to feast on this black and white creature. Males are usually a bit larger than females. Their body size fluctuates throughout the year, as they may lose up to half their body weight while holed up during the cold winter months. Striped skunks have short, stocky legs with five toes on each foot. Striped skunks closely resemble hooded skunks, confounding researchers trying to study them. Skunks are born with their stripes even before their fur grows in! However, the fur pattern varies across its vast range, from completely white or completely black. Its bushy, black tail with some white “highlights” is about half the length of its body. It also has a white bar on its forehead, between its eyes. Most of its fur is black, with a dazzling white stripe that starts at its head and splits into a wide V-shape at its rump. Striped skunks are about the size of house cats, with small triangular-shaped heads, small ears, and dark eyes. Skunks, as a group, inhabit North America and South America (their Old World relatives are the aptly named stink badgers). This page will concentrate on the striped skunk. There is considerable variation in coat pattern among them, but they have a great deal in common, including their debilitating olfactory abilities. While the striped skunk, with its dramatic white V of fur from its head down its body, may be the most well-known, there are nine more skunk species in this family ( Conepatus, Mephitis, Spilogale), as well as two stink badger species ( Mydaus) inhabiting Asia. Skunks have “trained” just about all the wildlife in their habitat-except domesticated dogs!-to steer clear of them, due to their potential for dousing perceived threats in a lingering, noxious odor. Whether striped, spotted, hog-nosed, or hooded, these nocturnal creatures will likely stop you in your tracks. After dancing to their favorite song, he got down on one knee to propose. Katie had always dreamed about getting married at her parent’s house, so that’s exactly what she did. “It is a beautiful place that holds so many wonderful memories from my childhood, our engagement, and now our wedding,” she says. We asked the bride more about the big day. I wish…that I had stopped decorating and started getting ready sooner. I think that one of the hard things about getting married at home and doing so much myself was that there was always one more thing that I could do. I didn’t realize…that picking out my dress would be so easy. I am well known for my indecisiveness, but went into Andrea’s Bridal with a good idea of what I wanted. As soon as my best friend pulled it from the rack and I put it on I knew I wanted to get married in it. The owner, Julia, worked with my budged and made the dress of my dreams within reach. After trying on only four dresses I had made my choice, and everyone was shocked. One of my favorite moments was…seeing each other for the first time as I walked down the aisle. I really liked…that the wedding was truly a family affair. I am very close to my family, and it was so special to have the people that I love most with me along the way. My older sister designed the save-the-dates, invitations, and programs. One of my brothers built a gorgeous altar from trees and salvaged wood. My other brother manicured the extensive lawns meticulously. My mom and younger sister baked the beautiful bundt cakes. My dad cut log accents and polished his antique tractors. To that end, she earned an associate’s degree from the University of Maine at Augusta’s music program and continued to pursue her music career while raising a family. She sang in several local bands and wrote her first song, “Miriam’s Song,” while her daughter was taking a an afternoon nap. She thinks they are useful and some people in her field have already requested some from me, but I haven’t applied for an approval to produce them yet, so I politely declined. I found online designs, printed them, and gave them to my sister to use as a temporary solution. With the outbreak of the coronavirus and since my sister is a dentist, I was worried about her health, especially since there is a shortage in personal protective equipment, so I thought about using my 3-D printer to print facemasks and face shields for her. These are not very widespread in Egypt, but they are gaining popularity, especially now. In my centre, we used to facilitate some activities for the children using a 3-D printer. My goal is to introduce them to the languages of the future. I am mainly teaching them the basics of programming. I also had to close the centre as I couldn’t pay the rent, but I shifted to facilitating online activities for the children. What made it even worse is that this is the beginning of the summer season and this is our most active time of the year, since children are off from schools. My centre suspended its activities since 14 March 2020, because it’s a place where many children are gathered at the same time. Unfortunately, the coronavirus crisis had a huge, negative impact on my life and the lives of those close to me. It is an open field where you can always innovate using whatever materials or tools that are available to you at a low cost. There, I joined a club called ‘Alpha’ and it really increased my passion for robotics and electronics. “My passion for engineering started at a very young age and it led me to the Department of Electrical Engineering of Mansoura University. Randa Atef dons the face shield she produced for her sister.
The clunky bolting on of an obvious Agenda doesn’t help, beginning with an opening scene which seemed more like a candidate for /r/thathappened than anything. This could have worked as a small-town character study, with the cops forced out of their comfort zone by events far beyond their experience. The less aggrandized roles are considerably more interesting, in a Coen brothers way, such as his father, or fellow detective Julia Robson (Lindholme). It’s also a shame, as the rest of the film has quite a few laudable elements. It’s not long before you’re tuning John out entirely, and since he’s the central character (thank to Jim the writer giving Jim the actor the biggest role), it’s a problem. But the rule of diminishing returns rapidly kicks in for the audience, because the more a character shouts, the less attention you pay to them. There’s no doubt it’s completely intentional. If you think this might all result in less a performance than a protracted series of scenes in which John yells at his family, friends and co-workers, you’d be right. Human? Animal? Or some more mythical creature? Local policeman John Marshall (Cummings) leads the investigation, while simultaneously having to cope with his ailing father (Forster) – still the town sheriff, though he should really quit – as well as barely-controlled alcoholism, a shrewish estranged wife and a teenage daughter with teenage issues. Wolf tracks are found around the body – though of a size more appropriate for a bear. It takes place in the small Utah mountain community of Snow Hollow, where a visiting woman is brutally slain. Cummings delivers an unpleasantly egotistical portrayal that largely negates whatever positive aspects he brings to the table, wearing his other two hats. In this case, it’s the final element which is problematic. What are the odds? Beyond that, this represents another exhibit in my ongoing campaign to stop people from writing, directing and starring in their own films. But because I realized I had, unknown to me at the time, accidentally written a huge spoiler for this just last week, discussing job cliches in horror films. Not because of the film, which is rather too angst-ridden to be the “horror comedy” it alleges. Phased out shortly afterwards, the AF1 returned around 1986 to select East Coast stores (with a slightly altered shape complete with more regional exclusives). Those exclusives turned the city into a destination for Forces footwear tourism along Interstate 95 brought the sneaker’s cult status to D.C. But the model lengthened its lifeline thanks to an extended collection of different colors, a byproduct of a “color of the month” initiative pushed by a cartel of Baltimore retailers (Charley Rudo, Downtown Locker Room, and Cinderella Shoes) making ambitious orders for special makeups. Nike’s initial intent was to shelve the AF1 in favor of the next style, the next technology. Inevitably, bolder, team-color Forces would follow-as would a low-cut, making the Air Force 1 an even more popular choice when it hit retail on a wider scale in 1983. The neutral white and grey palette was one of the only parts of the shoe that played it safe. On its 1982 introduction to the court, Nike designer Bruce Kilgore’s creation, initially only available as a high top, was striking for its hiking-boot-inspired cues and uniquely chunky sole-it was the first Nike Air cushioning on a hoops shoe. The hyped-up collaborations and limited-run collectibles may have given the AF1 a covetable level of prestige and helped spread its gospel to new generations, but the monotone makeups, particularly the white-on-white, have been the ones keeping the lights on at most sneaker shops over the years. A decade ago, sporting-goods analyst Matt Powell told the New York Times that the shoe sold an estimated 12 million pairs in 2005 alone, more than two decades after its debut the sneaker is still Nike’s second bestseller a decade later, according to Powell. The white Air Force 1 Low is one of the bestselling shoes of all time. One rare example of such sneakers that cross over into both worlds is the Nike Air Force 1 in its most popular, iconic style: low-cut, in all-white. For Nike, the shoes that sell shareholder-pleasing units tend to be white leather shoes l ike the dad-friendly Air Monarch line-ones that cool kids and connoisseurs hate. They’re consistently worn by both footwear enthusiasts and the general public. The ones that do are the true classics-the trends that graduate to staples. The Nike Air Force 1 '07 Fresh drops July 15th at 10 AM EST.In the world of sneakers, few styles last. One might assume Nike doesn't care how you wear your sneakers, but a forthcoming release implies otherwise. The laces are left with remnants of late nights there's residue from rides on the subway on the midsole sticky splashes of old beer on the toe. "Cooked" Air Force 1s have creases, dirty logos and worn-down outsoles. On the other side, there are those that covet the "cooked" look, an adjective coined on Twitter and relayed to the masses through memes. On one side, you have those that will only step out in pairs that are both new and pearly white. Air Force 1s in particular polarize more than others - and that's probably why Nike picked this silhouette to test its new 'Fresh' technology. Some folks live with these scuffs and stains, though, to the disgust of those that value crisp, clean kicks. Like, I feel you should know the rules before you break them.- sean March 2, 2019 It’s crazy that there’s an entire genre of people who religiously wear cooked Air Force Ones but know nothing about walking without bending their toes to keep a pair fresh or buying 2 at a time. And, as an added bonus, although most sneakers come this way, Nike is throwing in an extra set of laces - woo! Plus, all of the branding, which is woven on on the original AF1, is debossed, preventing non-clear liquids from permanently staining the sewing fabric. But when a fresh pair of sneakers do spoil, whether by accident (busy bar, muddy music festival) or by fault of your own (spilled drink, dropped snack), it's a bummer nonetheless.īut Nike thinks it has a fix: Meet the Air Force 1 '07 Fresh, an iteration of the all-white Air Force 1 that will be resistant to creases, easier to clean and more breathable, making them less likely to smell, even after a few wears without socks in the dead of summer. They're the tires to your daily driver - what separates your bare feet and socks from the rain, sleet, snow, road salt and spilled drinks covering city sidewalks. It's a design flaw few brands haven't fallen victim to. They wear out rather easily, even if you don't put them on every day.
